Open Letter to Harvard University Regarding Academic Freedom and Federal Funding

Dear Harvard Development Office,

I recently made a donation to the Harvard Presidential Priorities Fund, driven by a deep concern for the future of academic freedom and scientific integrity in the United States. My contribution was prompted by troubling reports indicating that the current federal administration is threatening to cut funding for several Harvard activities, including critical medical research, unless the university complies with politically motivated demands.

As a donor and an advocate for higher education, I was appalled by these threats, which I view as a direct assault on the core values of a free and democratic society. Harvard has long been a beacon of intellectual freedom and scientific advancement, and the prospect of it bowing to such political pressure is deeply troubling.

Recent news reports suggest that Harvard may be preparing to surrender to these pressures, a development that would render my donation meaningless. If Harvard chooses to comply with federal demands, it risks setting a dangerous precedent for other academic institutions nationwide, potentially normalizing censorship and ideological conformity in higher education.

I urge Harvard to stand firm in its commitment to academic freedom and resist any attempts to condition funding on ideological conformity. My donation was made with the explicit intention of supporting Harvard in this endeavor, and I am prepared to continue my support as long as the university remains steadfast in its principles.

Please note that I am committed to supporting institutions that prioritize academic freedom. I would appreciate transparency regarding Harvard’s decision-making process and am eager to engage in constructive dialogue about upholding these values. If Harvard chooses a path that aligns with my principles, I will gladly continue to support your initiatives. Conversely, if Harvard decides to comply with external pressures, I may explore other avenues for my future contributions to ensure my support benefits institutions that share my commitment to academic independence.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent request.

Sincerely,
A believer in democracy
